SMU Undergraduate Admissions 2027: A Guide for Indian Students

SMU undergraduate admissions for Indian students rest on three things: at least 90% in five Class 12 subjects including English (CBSE, ISC and state boards are treated alike), one test score from the SAT, ACT, IELTS, TOEFL, C1 Advanced, PTE Academic or AST, and an interview if you are shortlisted. For 2026 entry, SMU’s window for international qualifications ran from 17 November 2025 to 19 March 2026. SMU had not published its 2027-entry dates when we checked in October 2026.
Updated October 2026 for 2027 entry. Requirements and dates are from official university sources, linked below.
Singapore Management University has dedicated schools of business, accountancy and economics, which makes it a natural option for students aiming at those fields. SMU teaches in seminars of no more than 45 students, every student completes at least one ten-week internship, and its “100% policy” sends every student overseas. Its admissions rules for Indian students are also different from NUS and NTU in one important way: a test score is compulsory for every Indian board. If you’d like help with the application itself, see our Singapore undergraduate admissions support. Our companion guides cover NUS admission requirements for Indian students and NTU Singapore admissions, and our NUS vs NTU vs SMU vs SUTD comparison sets the four side by side.

SMU’s schools and degrees
SMU has seven undergraduate schools and colleges. You apply to a degree, and you can add a second major from any of the seven, whatever your primary degree.
| School | Degrees | Extra requirement for Indian applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Lee Kong Chian School of Business | Bachelor of Business Management | None beyond the general rules |
| School of Accountancy | Bachelor of Accountancy | None beyond the general rules |
| School of Economics | Bachelor of Science (Economics) | A good pass in Mathematics at high school level |
| School of Computing and Information Systems | Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, and Computing and Law | Computer Science: a good pass in Mathematics at high school level |
| Yong Pung How School of Law | Bachelor of Laws | Higher test minimums; a writing test before any interview |
| School of Social Sciences | Bachelor of Social Sciences | None beyond the general rules |
| College of Integrative Studies | Bachelor of Integrative Studies (Individualised Major) | None beyond the general rules |
For business and economics applicants, the second-major rule matters: a Business Management student can take a second major from the School of Economics, and an Economics student one from the business school.
SMU undergraduate admissions requirements for Indian boards and IB
These are from SMU’s International and Other Qualifications and IB Diploma pages. Both still showed the 2026-entry exercise when we checked in October 2026, so treat them as the latest published rules and recheck when the 2027 window opens.
| Requirement | India Standard 12 (CBSE, ISC, state boards) | IB Diploma |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum to apply, results in hand | At least 90% for five subjects including English | IB Diploma awarded by the IB Organisation |
| Minimum to apply, still in Class 12 | Predicted Class 12 grades or your most recent school exam results; expected to score at least 90% for five subjects including English, with results by end July | Predicted scores provided by your teacher |
| Standardised or English test | Required: any one of SAT, ACT, IELTS (Academic), TOEFL, C1 Advanced, PTE Academic or AST | Not required |
| Economics and Computer Science | A good pass in Mathematics at high school level | A good pass in IB Mathematics at Higher or Standard Level |
| Law and Computing and Law | Law test minimums apply (see below) | Grade 6 or 7 in English A at Higher or Standard Level |
| Predicted scores | Must be attested by your school; self-declared predicted scores are not accepted | Must come from your teacher; self-declared scores are not accepted |
SMU accepts only the international qualifications on its list, and India Standard 12 is on it. JEE does not feature in SMU’s requirements.
Minimum test scores
SMU calls these scores “minimally sufficient” for a competitive application; meeting them does not guarantee an interview or a place.
| Test | All programmes except Law | Law |
|---|---|---|
| SAT | 1,350 total, with at least 650 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing | 1,350 total, with at least 700 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing |
| ACT | Composite 29, English plus Reading at least 57 | Composite 29, English plus Reading at least 64 |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 overall, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5 | 7.5 overall, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 |
| TOEFL iBT (tests from 21 January 2026) | 5 overall, Reading 5, Writing 4.5 | 5.5 overall, Reading 5.5, Writing 5 |
| PTE Academic | 66 overall, Reading 66, Writing 56 | 76 overall, Reading 76, Writing 66 |
| C1 Advanced | 185 overall, Reading 185, Writing 176 | 191 overall, Reading 185, Writing 185 |
All sections must come from one sitting; SMU does not combine scores across sittings. SAT and ACT scores are valid for five years, and IELTS, TOEFL, C1 Advanced and PTE Academic scores for two. Upload your score report after applying and have the testing agency send official scores (SMU’s codes: SAT 2861, ACT 5284, TOEFL 9014; for IELTS and C1 Advanced, choose Singapore Management University from the list).
The practical point: SMU accepts IELTS or TOEFL in place of the SAT. A CBSE or ISC student who is not otherwise taking the SAT (NUS and NTU do not ask them for it) can meet SMU’s rule with an English test. Our article on applying to NUS and NTU without the SAT covers that plan, and what counts as a good SAT score helps if you are taking it anyway.
How SMU assesses applications
SMU describes its approach as “holistic and aptitude-based”. Beyond grades, it looks for “aptitude, positive attitude, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and communication skills”, and names the evidence it values:
- leadership in co-curricular activities
- impactful involvement in community service and volunteer programmes
- significant awards and achievements relevant to the course you are applying for
- work or internships relevant to that course
Shortlisted applicants for every course other than Law are interviewed. Law applicants who are shortlisted first take a writing test, which SMU’s IB page says is held in person at SMU; only those shortlisted again are invited to interview, and you must attend both to be considered. In the 2026 cycle, interviews and tests ran from March to May.
Treat the interview as seriously as your marks. SMU’s own prompts give you a sense of the conversation: what excites you intellectually, how you have tried to change something in your community, how you would challenge yourself at university. Prepare two or three specific stories, including one about something that went wrong, and be ready to talk about why business, accountancy or economics at SMU rather than elsewhere.
SMU application dates and steps
The latest published timeline is for 2026 entry. Use it to plan, but check SMU’s Important Dates page for 2027 entry before you rely on any date.
| Stage | 2026-entry timeline (latest published) |
|---|---|
| Application window, international qualifications | 17 November 2025 to 19 March 2026, 11.59pm Singapore time |
| Test scores and school-attested predicted scores | By 31 March 2026 |
| Interviews and tests for shortlisted applicants | March to May |
| Final board results | Upload within 3 working days of release |
| Admission decisions | May to July; offers in the second window had to be answered by 16 June 2026 |
The steps, in order:
- Apply online under the “International/Other qualifications” category.
- Upload documents through Applicant’s Self Service: passport, Class 10 results, Class 12 results (actual or predicted), test scores, and any testimonials, activity or award records.
- Pay the non-refundable S$15 application fee by Visa or Mastercard credit card. SMU does not accept debit cards or charge cards for this payment.
- Have official test scores sent by the testing agency.
- Apply for scholarships and the Tuition Grant in the same form. SMU has no separate scholarship form.
Take your test well before the window opens. SMU’s deadline for test scores has been less than two weeks after its application deadline, so a retake in March leaves no room for error.
SMU tuition fees and the Tuition Grant
SMU uses a fixed fee model: your fees stay the same for the normal four years of study. Fees for 2027 entry had not been published when we checked, so here is what SMU charges students who started in Academic Year 2026/27 (“other international students”, S$ per year, inclusive of GST, checked October 2026):
| Degree | With MOE Tuition Grant | Without Tuition Grant |
|---|---|---|
| Accountancy, Business Management, Integrative Studies, Economics, Computing and Law, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Social Sciences | 26,200 | 47,700 |
| Bachelor of Laws | 30,450 | 56,150 |
International students also paid S$367 in miscellaneous student fees for 2026, covering student activities, insurance and IT.
The Tuition Grant matters more at SMU than many families expect. SMU says “there is a limited number of Tuition Grants available for international students, and selection is competitive and based on merit”. You apply for it in the admission form and accept it together with your place. Successful applicants must work for a Singapore entity for three years after graduation, and Singapore’s Ministry of Education asks international recipients to nominate two sureties to sign the agreement. If you pay the non-subsidised fee, there is no work obligation. Our guide to Singapore university scholarships and the Tuition Grant compares the options.
Mistakes Indian applicants make with SMU
- Assuming CBSE or ISC means no test. True at NUS and NTU, not at SMU. Every Indian board needs one test score.
- Mixing sittings. SMU does not combine section scores from different test dates.
- Taking IELTS too early. English test scores are valid for two years. For the 2026 exercise, SMU would not consider IELTS, TOEFL, C1 Advanced or PTE scores from before 19 March 2024.
- Sending self-declared predicted scores. SMU wants them attested by your school, so ask your school early.
- Forgetting the official score report. Uploading a screenshot is not enough; the agency must send scores to SMU.
- Treating the interview like a viva on Class 12 subjects. SMU’s prompts are about curiosity, attitude and what you have done, so prepare examples.
- Counting on the Tuition Grant. It is limited and merit-based for international students. Agree a plan for both fee levels before you accept.

Not specifically. Indian Standard 12 applicants need any one of the SAT, ACT, IELTS, TOEFL, C1 Advanced, PTE Academic or AST. IB Diploma applicants need none.
Does SMU treat CBSE, ISC and state boards differently?
No. SMU groups them under India Standard 12 and asks for at least 90% in five subjects including English.
Does SMU interview every applicant?
No, only shortlisted applicants. Law adds a writing test before the interview.
When does SMU open applications for 2027 entry?
SMU had not published 2027-entry dates when we checked in October 2026. For 2026 entry, applications ran from 17 November 2025 to 19 March 2026.

For 2026 entrants, S$26,200 a year with the Tuition Grant or S$47,700 without it for most degrees, and S$30,450 or S$56,150 for Law. 2027 fees are not yet published.
How GyanOne Helps With Your Application
We help Indian students apply to SMU alongside NUS, NTU and universities in other countries, and our students have earned 55 Singapore admits in a single year. For SMU, that means choosing the right test for your profile and timing it, getting predicted scores attested by your school, building the activity and achievement evidence SMU says it values, preparing you for the interview (and the Law writing test), and deciding with your family whether to apply for the Tuition Grant.
You can work with us in two ways. Application-Only Support is for Class 12 students who already have SMU on their list and want expert help with the application, documents, interview and deadlines. Comprehensive University Strategy is for families who want help choosing countries, courses and universities and building a profile from Class 9 onwards. We have no admissions partnerships or tie-ups with any university and are never paid by universities, so our advice is in your child’s interest. Parents are welcome in the process; we work directly with the student. Get help with your NUS, NTU or SMU application.
