Common App essay help and application support for US universities.
One Common App. Several universities. Your strongest story isn't necessarily the same for every school. Our Common App essay help starts with what your child has actually done, then shapes the personal essay, activities list, supplements and choice of round so each university reads the part of the story it cares about most.
One application, read differently by each university.
The shared sections go to every college on your list. The parts that often decide the outcome are different at every school.
The Common App saves you typing, not thinking. More than 1,200 colleges and universities use it for 2026–27, and the personal essay, activities list and honours you write once go to all of them. But each university adds its own questions, supplements, recommendation rules, testing policy and deadlines, and two big names are not on it at all: MIT and the University of California run their own applications. An essay that suits a small liberal arts college may not help an engineering application to a large public university.
For Indian applicants the traps are specific. Activities get written like a CV, with titles and no results, in a field that allows 150 characters. Essays retell board marks and Olympiad ranks that the transcript already shows. Schools that rarely write US-style letters send a thin counsellor recommendation and no school profile. Final Class 12 board results are not available when most US decisions are made, so predicted and mid-year marks matter, and Dartmouth will not accept predicted CBSE or ICSE marks towards its testing requirement. At need-aware universities such as Stanford, Penn and Cornell, the aid choice you make when you apply decides whether aid is possible at all.
We work on substance before wording: what your child has done, which universities will value it, and which story belongs in which essay. GyanOne has no admissions partnership with any university and is never paid by universities, so the list we build and the round we recommend are chosen for the student alone.

US universities we help with, on the Common App and off it.
Most use the Common App. A few important ones don't, and we help with those too.
Ivy League
All eight Ivy League universities accept the Common App. For fall 2027 entry, six require the SAT or ACT, while Columbia and Princeton stay test-optional this cycle and will require scores from 2027–28.
- Binding Early Decision: Penn, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell
- Restrictive or single-choice early action: Harvard, Yale, Princeton
- Each adds its own college-specific questions
Stanford and MIT
Stanford accepts only the Common App. MIT runs its own application portal, with its own essays and two teacher letters.
- Stanford: Restrictive Early Action 1 November, Regular Decision 5 January
- MIT: Early Action 1 November, Regular Action 4 January
- Both require the SAT or ACT
University of California
UC does not use the Common App. One UC application covers every campus you choose, and instead of a single long essay you answer four of eight Personal Insight Questions.
- Up to 350 words per question
- SAT and ACT not considered for admission
- Submit between 1 October and 30 November 2026
- $95 application fee per campus
Large public universities
Flagship public universities such as the University of Washington and Penn State use the Common App, and both also ask you to self-report every course and grade through STARS.
- UW Seattle: 15 November, with direct-to-major review for computer science, engineering and business
- Penn State: Common App or MyPennState, Early Action 1 November
- Testing policies vary by university
Liberal arts colleges
Small colleges built around undergraduate teaching, such as Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore and Pomona. Amherst is need-blind for international applicants and test-optional.
- Amherst: Early Decision 9 November 2026, Regular Decision 5 January 2027
- Two teacher evaluations at Amherst, Williams and Swarthmore
Other private universities
Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, UChicago, NYU, Georgetown and others, each with its own supplements and rounds. Georgetown joined the Common App for 2026–27.
- NYU: Early Decision II on 1 January 2027
- Duke and UChicago: Early Decision on 2 November 2026
- Georgetown: non-binding Early Action, but EA applicants cannot apply Early Decision elsewhere
How our Common App essay help works.
Six pieces of work, in the order that makes the essays easier to write.
Profile assessment
We go through the transcript, activities, projects and family context to find the two or three threads that are genuinely the student's own. That decides what the essay is about before anyone writes a word.
University selection
A balanced list across Ivy League, other private, public and liberal arts options, checked against each university's testing policy, its aid policy for international students and the strength of the intended major.
Rounds and planning
Which round for which university: Early Decision, Early Action, restrictive early action, Early Decision II or Regular Decision. Then a calendar for tests, supplements, school documents and the CSS Profile where aid is needed.
Essay, activities and supplements
One personal essay of up to 650 words built from real material, an activities list that shows results within 150 characters, honours and Additional Information used deliberately, and supplements written for each university rather than recycled.
Recommendations and school documents
We help the student brief the counsellor and teachers, and help the school understand what US universities expect: school report, transcript, school profile, counsellor letter, teacher letters and mid-year report.
Interviews and offers
Preparation for alumni or admissions interviews where a university offers them, then help comparing offers, aid letters and deadlines before the 1 May reply date.
Choose the support your family needs.
For Class 12 students applying in this cycle, and for families planning 2028 entry or later.
Application-Only Support
For students who already know their US universities and want expert help completing strong applications: the UC application by 30 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision applications due in early January 2027.
- Personal essay development and edits
- Activities, honours and Additional Information
- University-specific supplements and short answers
- Recommender briefing, school documents and deadline planning
- Final quality check and interview preparation
Comprehensive University Strategy
For families who want help weighing the US against other countries, choosing courses and universities, and building the profile that later becomes the application. Students now in Class 11 apply for 2028 entry, when Columbia and Princeton will also require the SAT or ACT.
- Student assessment and course direction
- Country and university selection
- SAT or ACT plan and timing
- Profile development: projects, research, summer programmes
- Application roadmap and ongoing counselling

Strengthen my Common App →78 US admits in a single year.
In a single year, 78 of our 257 undergraduate admits were to US universities, more than to any other country. Stanford and Harvard are among GyanOne's undergraduate admits.
Common App and US undergraduate admissions: questions parents ask
Does every US university use the Common App?
No. More than 1,200 colleges use it for 2026–27, including all eight Ivy League universities, Stanford and, new this cycle, Georgetown. MIT has its own application, and the University of California uses the UC application for all its campuses.
How long is the Common App essay, and have the prompts changed?
The personal essay has a 650-word limit, and the seven prompts for 2026–27 are the same as last year. In 2025–26 the most popular was the topic of your choice, picked by 28% of students. Read our Common App 2026–27 guide for how each section works.
Does my child need the SAT or ACT?
For many of the most selective universities, yes. Harvard, Yale, Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Stanford and MIT require scores for fall 2027 entry. Columbia and Princeton are test-optional this cycle but will require scores from 2027–28. See SAT and ACT and what counts as a good SAT score.
Should we apply Early Decision?
Only if the university is a clear first choice and the family has checked the cost. Early Decision is binding: you apply ED to one college and withdraw other applications if admitted. At Penn the student, a parent and the counsellor all sign the ED agreement.
Can Indian students get financial aid at US universities?
Yes, at some. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth, Amherst and, from the Class of 2029, Brown do not let an international student's aid request affect admission. Stanford, Penn, Cornell and Columbia consider it for international applicants, and Stanford, Penn and Cornell will not consider aid later if you did not ask when you applied. Many use the CSS Profile, which costs $25 for the first college and $16 for each additional one.
Our school has no college counsellor. What happens to the school report?
Any school official with access to the student's academic records can be invited to submit the transcript and school forms. We help the student brief that person on the counsellor letter, school report and school profile.
We have missed 1 November. Is it too late for 2027?
No. The UC application is open until 30 November 2026, the University of Washington's deadline is 15 November, Penn State reviews on a rolling basis after 1 November, and Regular Decision deadlines in our table fall between 1 and 5 January 2027.
Does GyanOne have tie-ups with US universities?
No. We have no admissions partnership with any university and are never paid by universities. See our undergraduate counselling for the full programme.
Applying to US universities for 2027 or 2028?
Tell us the student's class, school curriculum (CBSE, ISC, IB or other), intended course, target universities and entry year. A consultant will reply personally.
