NUS vs NTU vs SMU (and SUTD) is less a question of which name is bigger than of what your child wants to study and how they like to learn. NUS has the widest range, from Computing and Engineering to Law and Medicine. NTU suits students who want a large residential campus and project-based learning. SMU suits business, economics, computing and law students who want small seminar classes in the city centre, and SUTD suits students set on design, engineering, architecture or computer science taught hands-on. Entry rules for Indian students differ too: NTU sets a 93% Class 12 minimum, SMU 90% plus a test score, and NUS asks state-board students for SAT or ACT scores plus AP courses.

Updated October 2026 for 2027 entry. Requirements, dates and fees are from official university sources, linked below.

We don’t rank these universities against each other here, and we’d be wary of anyone who does without a source. What follows is what each university publishes about itself and its rules for Indian applicants, so you can match them to your child. SMU’s test can be the SAT (1,350 with 650 in Reading and Writing), the ACT (29) or an English test such as IELTS Academic (7.0), with higher bars for Law. NUS’s state-board route needs a SAT of at least 600 in Reading and Writing and 650 in Mathematics in one sitting, and AP Calculus BC is compulsory for every programme except Law. Our guide to NUS and NTU without the SAT covers the testing choices in detail.

Tuition fees and the MOE Tuition Grant

Annual tuition for international students from outside ASEAN who started in 2026–27, including GST. Fees for 2027 entry are not yet published. All four fix a cohort’s fees for the normal length of the degree.

University and programme With Tuition Grant Without Tuition Grant
NUS: Computing, Engineering S$21,400 S$39,700
NUS: Humanities and Sciences S$21,400 S$36,650
NUS: Business S$22,200 S$33,400
NTU: most programmes S$21,400 S$40,600 (lab-based) or S$36,350
NTU: Business, Accountancy S$21,800 S$45,600
SMU: all degrees except Law S$26,200 S$47,700
SMU: Law S$30,450 S$56,150
SUTD: all programmes S$31,600 S$62,076

The Tuition Grant is the biggest money decision in a Singapore application. International students who take it must work full-time for a Singapore entity for three years after graduating, and two sureties must sign the agreement. You indicate interest in your application, and SMU notes that grants for international students are limited and awarded on merit. At NUS, students admitted without the grant are not eligible for NUS or MOE-funded financial aid and scholarships for the whole degree, and NTU’s scholarships are open only to applicants opting for subsidised fees. For living costs, NUS estimates about S$6,000 a year plus S$5,750 for on-campus housing over 35 weeks. More in our guide to scholarships and the Tuition Grant.

Who each university suits

NUS

Students who want the widest choice, or who may combine fields through a double degree or NUS College. CBSE and ISC students have the simplest route, with no tests. State-board students should apply only if they can complete SAT or ACT plus AP courses, including AP Calculus BC for most programmes. More in our NUS guide.

NTU

High scorers (93% and above) in engineering, computing, science or business who want campus life, with two years of guaranteed housing and a lot of team project work. Its window is open longest, but decisions for Indian Standard 12 come at the end of July with no provisional offers, so keep other options alive. More in our NTU guide.

SMU

Students who enjoy discussion and speaking up, aiming for business, accountancy, economics, information systems or law, and who want internships and a city campus. Plan the test and the interview: SMU needs a score from every Indian Standard 12 applicant and interviews shortlisted applicants. More in our SMU guide.

SUTD

Makers: students who want to design and build, in engineering, architecture, computer science or design and AI, and who are strong in Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry. Its tuition is the highest of the four for comparable programmes, it starts in September, and selected applicants have a conversation with faculty; shortlisted applicants with predicted results also sit SUTD’s entrance examination.

Choosing between offers

  • Offers arrive at different times. SUTD’s 2026 outcomes came by mid-May; NUS, NTU and SMU release through to July. Check each acceptance deadline before you let an offer lapse.
  • Compare like for like. With the Tuition Grant, NUS and NTU cost about the same for most programmes; SMU and SUTD cost more.
  • Housing differs. NTU guarantees two years; NUS gives priority to first-year international students who apply before its housing deadline.
  • Think about the bond. The three-year commitment applies at all four if you take the grant.

Frequently asked questions

Is NUS better than NTU for computer science?

Both have dedicated computing schools, and with the Tuition Grant both charged S$21,400 a year for 2026–27 entry. The bigger differences are entry rules (NTU’s 93% minimum; NUS’s tests for state boards) and teaching style, so compare the curricula.

Which is easiest to get into?

We haven’t seen any of the four publish admit rates for Indian students, and all describe admission as competitive. NTU’s 93% minimum and SMU’s 90% plus a test are the clearest published bars; meeting them only makes you eligible.

Can I apply to all four?

Yes. Each has its own form, fee and deadline, so you can apply to any combination.

Is SUTD only for engineers?

No. Its five programmes include Architecture and Sustainable Design, and Design and AI, though it prefers strong Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry.

How GyanOne helps with your application

We help Indian families decide which of the four fit the student, plan tests by board, and prepare NUS short responses, NTU aptitude-based answers, SUTD personal insight questions and interviews. In a single year, 55 of our undergraduate admits were to Singapore universities, and we have no tie-ups with any university.
