NUS Admission Requirements for Indian Students: 2027 Deadlines and How to Apply

NUS admission requirements for Indian students start with a good pass in five Class 12 subjects including English, an online application with short-answer questions, and a S$20 application fee. CBSE and ISC students do not need the SAT, ACT or an English test, while state-board students must submit standardised test scores. For 2027 entry, NUS accepts applications on Indian Standard 12 and other international qualifications from 16 December 2026 to 17 February 2027, and most of these applicants hear back by July 2027.
Updated October 2026 for 2027 entry. Requirements and dates are from official university sources, linked below.
For Indian applicants, NUS’s rules turn on three things: your board, the subjects you kept in Class 11, and whether your board results will be out before the deadline. This guide takes each in turn, then covers fees, offer timing and common mistakes. If you’d like help with the application itself, see our Singapore undergraduate admissions support. We have also written guides to NTU admissions for Indian students and SMU undergraduate admissions, and a side-by-side comparison of NUS, NTU, SMU and SUTD.

NUS application dates for 2027 entry
NUS groups applicants by qualification, and each group has its own window. Indian Class 12 students apply under “International Qualifications”. These dates are from NUS’s Important Dates page for Academic Year 2027/2028 (checked October 2026).
| Applicant group | Application period | When most outcomes are released |
|---|---|---|
| Indian Standard 12 (CBSE, ISC and state boards) and other international qualifications | 16 December 2026 to 17 February 2027 | By July 2027 |
| IB Diploma, November 2026 or earlier results | 16 December 2026 to 17 February 2027 | By the third week of May 2027 |
| IB Diploma, May 2027 candidates (apply with predicted grades) | 16 December 2026 to 17 February 2027 | By the third week of July 2027 |
Three practical points follow:
- The window is short. It runs for about nine weeks and overlaps with pre-board exams at many Indian schools. Draft your short-answer responses and achievements list before December.
- The fee is part of the deadline. NUS charges a non-refundable S$20 to international students with international qualifications, paid online (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, AliPay or PayNow) by the closing date. Your application is complete only once the form, supporting documents and fee are all in.
- Board results follow later. CBSE and ISC students sitting their boards in 2027 must update and submit final results through the Applicant Portal within three days of release.
NUS also requires at least 12 years of general education completed by July of the year you apply, and each applicant may submit only one application form. NTU’s window for Indian students opens earlier, on 15 October 2026, so you can file NTU before NUS opens.
NUS admission requirements for Indian students by board
This is where NUS differs most from NTU and SMU. NUS splits Indian Standard 12 into two categories: “Central and ISC Boards” (CBSE and CISCE) and “State and Other Boards”. The academic minimum is the same. The testing rule is not.
| Requirement | CBSE and ISC | State and other boards | IB Diploma |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum to apply | A good pass in five subjects including English | Good passes in five subjects including English | IB Diploma, with English as one of the subjects |
| SAT, ACT or AP | Not required | Required | Not required, except for Dentistry and Medicine |
| English language test | Not required | Not required | Only if at least three IB subjects were taught in a language other than English |
| JEE Main or Advanced | Not required | Not required | Not applicable |
| If board results come after the closing date | Eligible for all programmes except Dentistry, Law, Medicine and Nursing | Eligible for all programmes except Dentistry, Law, Medicine and Nursing | Apply with predicted grades attested by your school |
The CBSE/ISC and state-board rows come from the 2026-entry versions of NUS’s two Indian Standard 12 pages, the latest versions we could check in October 2026. NUS has already published the 2027 dates and the three-day results rule, but check both pages again when the window opens in December.
NUS does not publish a minimum percentage for Indian boards. Its pages ask for “a good pass” and say the university assesses applications “holistically based on all academic and non-academic achievements”. In practice, competition for international places sets the real bar, and it varies by programme.
What “standardised test required” means for state-board students
NUS’s standardised test document (updated December 2025) sets these minimums:
| Test | Minimum for consideration | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| SAT | Reading and Writing 600, Mathematics 650 | Both sections in one sitting; valid five years; official scores sent through College Board (NUS code 3720) |
| ACT with Writing | Composite 29, Writing 8 | All sections, including Writing, in one sitting; valid five years; official scores sent to NUS (code 5286) |
| AP | Score of 3 in each course | AP Calculus BC compulsory for all programmes except Law; courses must match your programme’s prerequisites |
The same document lists the accepted combinations for international qualifications as at least five AP courses, or the SAT plus at least three AP courses, or the ACT with Writing plus at least three AP courses. It is written for every international qualification that needs a test, not only Indian state boards. If you are on a state board, ask NUS through its Ask Admissions service whether an SAT on its own is enough, and plan for the SAT plus AP until you have the answer in writing. Scores must reach NUS from the testing agency and be uploaded to the Applicant Portal by the closing date; NUS treats an application without them as incomplete.
CBSE and ISC students can skip all of this for NUS. Our guide to applying to NUS and NTU without the SAT explains that route, and our digital SAT explainer covers the test itself.
Applying before your board results are out
Most Indian applicants apply in Class 12, before their boards. NUS’s application guide asks you to select “Predicted/Forecast” as your result type, say when your actual results will be available and enter your most recent results. For CBSE and ISC, the minimum to apply is stated as “Year 12 High School exam results prior to High School graduation”, so your school’s Class 12 exam marks carry real weight. When boards are out, NUS accepts an internet print-out of your results provisionally if it clearly shows your full name. It also warns that multiple or duplicate document submissions will affect the processing and outcome of your application, so upload once, cleanly.
Subject prerequisites for popular NUS degrees
Meeting the board minimum is not enough: each degree has its own subject prerequisites. These are from NUS’s prerequisites for international qualifications, marked “information accurate as of December 2025” (the 2026-entry list, checked October 2026). Read “Year 12” as Class 12.
| Programme | Subject prerequisite | Selection test or interview |
|---|---|---|
| Common computing programmes (including Computer Science) | Year 12 or higher-level pass in Mathematics | No |
| Computer Engineering | Year 12 Mathematics; students without Year 12 Physics must take Physics bridging courses | No |
| Engineering | Year 12 or higher-level pass in Mathematics | No |
| Business Administration, Business Analytics | Year 12 or higher-level pass in Mathematics | No |
| Data Science and Economics | Strong Year 12 pass in Mathematics | No |
| Pharmacy | Strong Year 12 pass in Chemistry, and Biology or Physics or Mathematics | No |
| Architecture | Year 12 pass in Chemistry or Mathematics or Physics or Physical Science | Yes |
| Law | A high level of proficiency in English | Yes |
| Medicine | Year 12 Chemistry, and Biology or Physics; UCAT; a portfolio submitted after the main application | Yes |
Two rules catch Indian families out. First, NUS only considers Dentistry or Medicine if you rank it first or second, and Law if you rank it first, second or third; where these are not your first choice, the programmes ranked above them must also be interview programmes. Second, for Dentistry and Medicine NUS considers only candidates who have submitted actual results by the closing date. Put together with the board rule above, a Class 12 student applying before boards cannot be considered for Medicine, Dentistry, Law or Nursing at NUS that year. Those courses become realistic only if you apply after your results. NUS also notes that prerequisites change every year, so recheck the list for your intake.
Beyond marks: short answers, achievements and interviews
Besides grades, NUS looks at “the applicant’s interest, aptitude, and prior preparation”. Every applicant to every programme must:
- list up to four achievements, co-curricular activities or non-academic activities, and
- answer NUS’s mandatory short response questions.
NUS’s own examples of achievements include international Olympiad medals, internships related to the degree, leadership roles outside school, entrepreneurship, and creating software or an app that many people use. You can edit your achievements and short responses in the Applicant Portal until the closing date, but not after.
Some programmes add a test or interview for shortlisted applicants: Architecture, Industrial Design, Landscape Architecture, Dentistry, Law, Medicine and Nursing. In the 2026 cycle these ran from mid-March to late April. For Law, NUS now holds a written test first and invites only those who pass to interview. Shortlisted candidates are told through the Applicant Portal, not by email, so check it regularly from March. Dates for 2027 had not been published when we checked.
Four achievements is not many, so choose the ones with evidence and a link to your programme. “Built a Python tool our school library now uses” tells NUS more than “member of the coding club”.
NUS tuition fees for Indian students, with and without the Tuition Grant
NUS publishes fees for each new intake between February and April, and your intake’s fee then stays fixed for your whole degree. Fees for 2027 entry will appear in early 2027. The table shows what students who started in 2026 pay each year (Academic Year 2026/2027, “all other international students”, inclusive of GST, checked October 2026).
| Programme group | With MOE Tuition Grant (S$ per year) | Without Tuition Grant (S$ per year) |
|---|---|---|
| Business | 22,200 | 33,400 |
| Computing | 21,400 | 39,700 |
| Design and Engineering | 21,400 | 39,700 |
| Architecture, Landscape Architecture | 22,750 | 40,450 |
| Humanities and Sciences | 21,400 | 36,650 |
| Law | 30,450 | 44,450 |
| Pharmacy | 23,650 | 43,050 |
| Nursing | 22,500 | 38,750 |
| Medicine | 87,800 | 190,150 |
The MOE Tuition Grant is a Singapore Government subsidy. Singapore citizens get it automatically; international students have to apply for it. The condition is a bond: Singapore’s Ministry of Education says international recipients “must serve a 3-year bond after graduation”, which means three years of full-time work for a Singapore entity. You also nominate two sureties to sign the Tuition Grant Agreement, so line them up early. If you decline the grant, you pay the non-subsidised fee and have no bond. Medicine and Dentistry carry an extra Ministry of Health service bond for all students: six years for international students in Medicine and five in Dentistry.
Tuition is only part of the cost; housing and living expenses come on top. For scholarships, the grant’s terms and how to compare offers, see our guide to Singapore scholarships and the Tuition Grant.
When NUS offers arrive, and a timeline that works
NUS says outcomes are released progressively from mid-May to end-July, and most applicants with international qualifications hear by July. Offers are accepted through the Applicant Portal by the deadline in your outcome letter. Working back from that:
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Class 11 | Keep Mathematics if business, computing, engineering or economics might be on your list. State-board students: plan SAT and AP dates. |
| By November 2026 | Shortlist programmes and check prerequisites and ranking rules. Draft short responses. Collect evidence for your four achievements. |
| 16 December 2026 to 17 February 2027 | Submit the application, pay the S$20 fee, upload documents and, if required, have test scores sent. |
| March to April 2027 | Tests and interviews for the programmes that hold them (based on the 2026 pattern). |
| Board results day | Upload results within three days. |
| Mid-May to July 2027 | Outcomes released; accept by the date in your letter. |
Mistakes Indian applicants make with NUS
- Getting the test rule backwards. Some CBSE and ISC students prepare for an SAT that NUS does not ask them for, while some state-board students assume their board is treated like CBSE and apply without one.
- Dropping Mathematics in Class 11. It closes off business, computing, engineering and data science and economics at NUS before the application starts.
- Treating the short responses as a form-filling step. Every applicant answers them. With so many applicants on similar marks, this is one of the few places to stand out.
- Planning Medicine or Law straight from Class 12. Without actual results by the closing date you are not eligible. Decide early whether a gap year is part of the plan.
- Applying under the wrong qualification type. NUS says applications submitted with an incorrect qualification type will not be processed. CBSE and ISC are “Central and ISC Boards”; everything else Indian is “State and Other Boards”.
- Not budgeting for both fee columns. The Tuition Grant is not automatic for international students, and the bond is a real commitment. Discuss it as a family before you tick the box.
Frequently asked questions
Do CBSE students need the SAT for NUS?
No. NUS lists standardised tests as not required for CBSE and ISC applicants. State-board applicants must submit them.
What percentage do I need for NUS?
NUS does not publish one for Indian boards. The stated minimum is a good pass in five subjects including English, and admission is competitive, so treat that as the floor, not the target.
Can I apply to NUS before my Class 12 board results?
Yes. Apply with your most recent Class 12 school results, then upload your board results within three days of release. You will not be eligible for Dentistry, Law, Medicine or Nursing that year.
How much does NUS cost an Indian student?
For students who started in 2026, most programmes cost S$21,400 to S$22,750 a year with the Tuition Grant and S$33,400 to S$40,450 without it, with Law, Pharmacy and Medicine higher. Fees for 2027 entry will be published in early 2027.
Can I apply to NUS, NTU and SMU in the same year?
Yes. Each university has its own application and window. See our NUS vs NTU vs SMU vs SUTD comparison to decide how to rank them.
How GyanOne Helps With Your Application
We help Indian students apply to NUS alongside NTU, SMU and universities in other countries, and our students have earned 55 Singapore admits in a single year. For NUS, that means checking your board’s test rule and your subject prerequisites early, ordering your programme choices around NUS’s ranking rules, shaping your four achievements and short responses so they show real interest in the subject, preparing you for faculty tests and interviews, and keeping track of the results-upload and acceptance deadlines.
You can work with us in two ways. Application-Only Support is for Class 12 students who already know they are applying to NUS and want expert help with the application, short responses, documents and deadlines. Comprehensive University Strategy is for families who want help choosing countries, courses and universities and building a profile from Class 9 onwards. We have no admissions partnerships or tie-ups with any university and are never paid by universities, so our advice is in your child’s interest. Parents are welcome in the process; we work directly with the student. Get help with your NUS, NTU or SMU application.
