Melbourne vs UNSW vs Sydney comes down to how your child wants to study, not rankings. The University of Melbourne teaches broad three-year bachelor’s degrees and moves professional training such as law and engineering to graduate level. The University of Sydney offers single degrees and combined degrees that complete two bachelor’s degrees at once. UNSW is the most career-focused, with work experience built into degrees such as engineering and commerce. First-year tuition for 2027 in commerce, science and engineering is between about A$55,500 and A$66,000 at all three, so decide on course structure, entry rules for your board and timing.

Updated October 2026 for 2027 entry. Requirements and dates are from official university and government sources, linked below.

This guide is for Indian parents and students in Class 11 and 12. If you would like help with the applications themselves, see our Australia undergraduate admissions support.

Degree structure: three different models

Melbourne: study broadly, specialise later

Melbourne now calls its model the Melbourne curriculum; many families still know it as the Melbourne Model. Students take a three-year bachelor’s in arts, biomedicine, commerce, design, fine arts, music or science, or a specialist degree in agriculture or oral health. A major makes up a third of the subjects, and breadth subjects let students study outside their faculty.

In Melbourne’s own words, the model is a three-year broad undergraduate degree followed by a two-year specialist graduate course. Law is the Juris Doctor, and engineers start in one of four undergraduate degrees before an engineering master’s. A Graduate Degree Package, open to international students, reserves the graduate place at the start. The practical point: a future lawyer or engineer at Melbourne is paying for five or more years, not three or four.

UNSW: career-focused, with a calendar change coming

UNSW runs three ten-week terms a year, but is introducing a flex-semester calendar from 2028: two 12-week semesters plus optional six-week summer and winter terms. A student starting in 2027 will be partway through the degree when it changes, and UNSW says degree length may vary depending on the intake you start in before 2028.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) requires 60 days of approved industrial training, and the Bachelor of Commerce includes work experience for course credit. One trap: UNSW’s Co-op Program, with its scholarships and internships, is not open to international students because of Australian work-rights rules.

Sydney: combined degrees and wide choice

Sydney’s combined degrees let students complete two bachelor’s degrees at the same time in one structure: Commerce and Arts or Commerce and Science take four years, and Commerce and Laws five. Several degrees open a shared pool of majors and minors across more than 100 disciplines, and high achievers may be invited into the Dalyell Scholars stream.

Some professional degrees start straight from school. Sydney’s Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine (7 years) asks for IB 45, ISC 99 or a CBSE score of 21 for 2027, plus other admission criteria. UNSW’s Bachelor of Medical Studies and Doctor of Medicine is another route, and international applicants must sit ISAT or UCAT ANZ. Medicine is not among Melbourne’s undergraduate degrees.

Entry requirements for CBSE, ISC and IB students

All three publish 2027 figures for Indian boards, but each calculates your score differently.

Course (2027 entry) Melbourne: CBSE or ISC / IB UNSW: CBSE / ISC / IB Sydney: CBSE points / ISC / IB
Commerce 90 / 34 85 / 92 / 36 19 / 94 / 38
Science 85 / 31 75 / 83 / 29 14 / 84 / 29
Engineering No engineering bachelor’s; start in another degree 81 / 90 / 35 15.5 / 87 / 31
Computing No separate bachelor’s; a concurrent Diploma in Computing is available Computer Science: 81 / 89 / 34 Advanced Computing: 17 / 90 / 34
Arts 74 / 27 75 / 83 / 29 12.5 / 81 / 26
  • Melbourne averages the best four final-year subjects, with one guide for both CBSE and ISC. It assures an offer at a published score only for some qualifications, such as the IB, A Levels and Australian Year 12; CBSE and ISC get indicative scores.
  • UNSW takes English or Hindi plus the best four CBSE subjects, but English plus the best three ISC subjects. Its table is a guide, and actual requirements may be higher or lower.
  • Sydney converts CBSE grades into points (A1 = 4, A2 = 3.5, B1 = 3 and so on) across English or Hindi and the best four other subjects. Four A1s and a B1 make 19; five A1s with an average mark of 96 or more count as 21. ISC is the average of the best four subjects including English.

So a CBSE student with weaker language marks loses more at UNSW and Sydney, which must count English or Hindi, than at Melbourne. And at Sydney, two A1s and three A2s add up to 18.5, just below the Commerce figure of 19, though every grade is an A.

Subject prerequisites and English

Maths is where Indian applicants most often get caught. Melbourne’s Commerce needs English and Mathematics; its Science needs English, Mathematics and one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. UNSW assumes Mathematics Advanced for Commerce, and Mathematics Extension 1 and Physics for Engineering. Sydney assumes Mathematics Extension 1 for Engineering and Advanced Computing and marks them with a maths prerequisite, with equivalents for other qualifications on its maths page. Check how your child’s Class 12 maths is treated before finalising subjects in Class 11.

English route Melbourne UNSW Sydney
Indian board English A recent pass in CBSE or ISC English CBSE English Core C1 or ISC English 70% (B2 or 80% for Business), within two years; not for Education, Law or Medicine Not listed on the English requirements page; check your course
IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0 (Commerce, Science) 6.5 (6.0) for most faculties; 7.0 (6.0) for Business and Law 6.5 (6.0) standard; 7.0 (6.0) for Commerce

Intakes and timing for Class 12 students

For a student finishing Class 12 in 2027, a February or March 2027 start is not possible. The real choice is a mid-year 2027 start or Semester 1 in 2028.

Melbourne UNSW Sydney
Mid-year 2027 July; direct applications close 31 May 2027 Term 2 (June) or Term 3 (September); dates not yet published August; applications close in May 2027
Start of year Semester 1 2027 closes 30 November 2026; 2028 dates not yet published Offshore Term 1 2027 applications open to 15 November 2026 Semester 1 2028 applications close in December 2027, earlier if a course fills
Predicted marks Final-year students can apply with their latest results for a conditional offer CBSE predicted marks accepted for full offers at 2 points above the standard; for Term 3, letters dated after 1 November of the previous year Check your course page

Mid-year starts are tight: deadlines fall around May, and scholarships that need an unconditional offer, and therefore final results, may be out of reach. Semester 1 2028 leaves time for results, scholarship rounds and the visa. Our Australian applications team can map the dates for your child’s board and course.

Fees and scholarships

2027, international Melbourne UNSW Sydney
Commerce, first year A$56,451–62,464 About A$59,520 A$59,100
Science, first year A$55,556–65,344 About A$66,000 A$63,600
Engineering, first year Graduate level About A$63,840 A$63,600
Scholarships Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship: 20% of fees for the course, 225 awards, automatic, final results only International Student Award: 20% every year; Scientia Coursework Scholarship: full tuition or A$20,000 a year Sydney International Student Award: 20% for the course, with a short personal statement; Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarships up to A$60,000 with an unconditional offer

UNSW charges per unit of credit (Commerce A$1,240, Engineering and Computer Science A$1,330, Science A$1,375 for 2027); the figures above multiply these by a standard 48-unit year. All three review fees each year.

Cost of living in Melbourne and Sydney

Melbourne Sydney
University figures Median weekly rent in metropolitan Melbourne: A$475 for a one-bedroom flat, A$575 for two bedrooms (Victorian Government data on the University of Melbourne’s site) UNSW: from about A$28,860 a year living modestly on campus, upwards of A$40,820 living alone in an apartment. University of Sydney: accommodation A$980–3,500 and food A$1,000–2,500 a month
Visa minimum for living costs A$29,710 a year for a student (Department of Home Affairs)

Home Affairs warns that real living costs may be much higher than the visa figure, so budget on the university estimates.

Work rights and life after graduation

Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session, and every applicant must meet the Genuine Student requirement, in force since 23 March 2024. After graduating, Indian nationals can usually stay on a Temporary Graduate visa for 2 years after a bachelor’s, or 3 years with first-class honours in a STEM field including ICT. Applicants must generally be 35 or under.

Who each university suits

  • Melbourne: a student who wants to explore before choosing, or who knows the graduate profession and accepts the longer path.
  • UNSW: a student sure about engineering, computing, actuarial studies or commerce who wants work experience inside the degree.
  • Sydney: a student who wants two degrees, such as commerce with arts or law, or a professional degree from school.

Mistakes Indian families make when comparing the three

  1. Comparing percentages across universities. 90 at Melbourne, 85 at UNSW and 19 points at Sydney are different bars built on different subjects.
  2. Dropping maths in Class 11. Melbourne’s Commerce needs Mathematics, and Sydney and UNSW assume it for commerce, computing and engineering.
  3. Planning for a February start straight after Class 12. Plan for mid-year or the following February.
  4. Counting on scholarships decided before results. Melbourne’s award ignores predicted results, and Sydney’s Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship needs an unconditional offer.
  5. Assuming UNSW’s Co-op Program is open to them. It is not open to international students.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child study engineering at Melbourne straight after Class 12?

Not as a bachelor’s degree. Students start in one of four undergraduate degrees and then take an engineering master’s; a Graduate Degree Package can reserve that place. UNSW and Sydney offer four-year engineering honours degrees from school.

Do these universities accept ISC students?

Yes. Melbourne uses one guide for CBSE and ISC. UNSW asks more of ISC students (92 against 85 for Commerce) and counts different subjects, and Sydney uses a percentage for ISC and grade points for CBSE.

Is there a cap on international students?

The government has set a National Planning Level of 295,000 new international students for 2027, the same as 2026, managed through visa processing priorities. Apply early, as some courses close once full.
