HKU vs HKUST vs CUHK comes down to three questions: what your child wants to study, how they want to learn, and when you want an answer. HKU teaches in English, offers professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry and law, and builds a 36-credit Common Core into its degrees. HKUST also teaches in English, focuses on science, engineering and business, and admits many students to a school rather than a major. CUHK teaches in Chinese and English, places every student in one of nine colleges, and has the earliest 2027 deadline: 12 November 2026.

Updated October 2026 for 2027 entry. Requirements and dates are from official university sources, linked below.

All three accept CBSE, ISC and IB students directly, outside JUPAS, and consider applicants for entrance scholarships automatically. They differ on programmes, teaching model, cut-offs, deadlines and cost. If you’d like help with the applications themselves, see our Hong Kong undergraduate admissions support.

Strengths by field: what each university offers

Rankings change every year. A simpler test: does the programme your child wants exist, and how do they get in? This is what each university lists for international applicants for 2027 entry.

Field HKU HKUST CUHK
Business and economics BBA, Economics and Finance, Quantitative Finance, Actuarial Science School of Business and Management: BBA majors, Economics and Finance, Quantitative Finance Faculty of Business Administration
Engineering and computing BEng (civil, mechanical, computer, electrical and more), Computing and Data Science School of Engineering, with school-based or department-based entry, including Computer Science and Engineering Faculty of Engineering
Sciences BSc, Biomedical Sciences School of Science: Science (Group A) and (Group B) Faculty of Science
Medicine and health MBBS, Dental Surgery, Pharmacy, Nursing BSc in Biomedical and Health Sciences Faculty of Medicine, including the MBChB
Law LLB and law double degrees Not among its 2027 choices Faculty of Law
Humanities and social sciences Arts, Social Sciences, Psychology Global China Studies, Quantitative Social Analysis Faculties of Arts, Social Science and Education

The pattern is clear. If medicine or law is the goal, the choice is between HKU and CUHK, and medicine carries a language condition that is easy to miss: HKU lists a good working knowledge of Chinese for its MBBS, and CUHK’s medical faculty asks for proficiency in English and Chinese. If your child is set on engineering, science or business and wants time to settle on a specialisation, HKUST’s structure is built for that.

Teaching model and curriculum

HKU: a degree from day one, plus the Common Core

At HKU your child applies to named degrees and starts in that degree. Alongside it, students normally take 36 credits of Common Core courses: interdisciplinary courses taught by staff from every faculty, covering areas such as science and technology, the arts and humanities, global issues and China. It suits students who know what they want to study but don’t want to study only that.

HKUST: school-based admission and major selection

HKUST lets students apply to a school, such as Science (Group A or B), Engineering with an Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence, or Business and Management, and choose a major in the spring of Year 1 or the autumn of Year 2. Engineering also offers department-based entry. One detail matters: HKUST says entry to Computer Engineering and to the BEng in Artificial Intelligence through major selection is possible but competitive because of a tight quota, and it encourages keen students to seek direct admission instead.

CUHK: the college system

CUHK describes itself as the only university in Hong Kong with a collegiate system. Every undergraduate belongs to one of nine colleges, which add pastoral care and non-formal learning, and several are fully residential with communal dining. Colleges are assigned using preferences, programmes and admission scores, so a first preference isn’t certain. Degrees are 123 units, including a University Core of languages and General Education.

Language of instruction

HKU states that its medium of instruction is English. HKUST’s general policy is the same, with exceptions only for approved Chinese studies courses. CUHK is bilingual: courses are taught in Chinese, English or both, and it says enough English-taught courses are offered to international students. Your child does not need Chinese to apply to CUHK, except for a few programmes such as Chinese Medicine and Chinese Language and Literature. If an English-only classroom matters, check the teaching language of the CUHK programme before applying.

Admission route and timing for Indian applicants

JUPAS is for local students applying with HKDSE results. Indian students apply to each university directly, so you will manage three separate applications, fees and timelines.

CUHK’s Medicine programme is an exception: its advance offer round does not apply, so MBChB applicants work to the 7 January 2027 deadline.

Requirements for CBSE, ISC and IB students

HKU HKUST CUHK

Fees, scholarships and housing

HKU HKUST CUHK
Tuition, 2027/28 HK$250,000 (non-STEM), HK$280,000 (STEM), HK$590,000 (MBBS and BDS) HK$260,000 HK$230,000; yearly rises for the 2027 cohort capped at 3%
University housing Halls HK$17,290 to HK$37,940 a year Year 1 for non-local students; about HK$21,000 to HK$51,000 a year (autumn 2026 rates) About HK$17,000 a year (2026–27), normally for the study period minus two years
Living costs (university estimate) Up to HK$50,000 a year About HK$65,000 a year About HK$45,000 a year
Entrance scholarships Automatic; awards for Indian board students, including a full-ride scholarship for top CBSE students Automatic academic awards up to full tuition plus HK$65,000 a year; non-academic awards need a separate application by 25 Nov 2026 Automatic; HK$5,000 to full tuition, some with an allowance of up to HK$66,000 a year

Read the housing row carefully. HKUST houses non-local students in Year 1 and suggests budgeting HK$4,500 to HK$18,000 a month for off-campus rent after that. On a four-year degree, CUHK’s policy normally means two years on campus. CUHK also says financial aid is not available to international students, so plan your funding on scholarships and family resources.

After graduation: careers and the IANG visa

The Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG) cover graduates of all three. Non-local students who complete a full-time, locally accredited degree and apply within six months of graduation don’t need a job offer and may be granted 24 months’ stay, subject to normal immigration requirements. During the degree, HKU notes that students with a No Objection Letter from the Immigration Department can work part-time on campus for up to 20 hours a week.

Which should your child choose?

  • HKU suits a student who knows the degree they want, especially a professional one such as dentistry or law (or medicine, for students with a good working knowledge of Chinese), has board marks well clear of 90% with strong subject marks, and wants an English-medium degree with a broad Common Core.
  • HKUST suits a science, engineering or business student who wants English-medium teaching and time to choose a major. If your child is certain about computer science or computer engineering, seek direct admission.
  • CUHK suits a student who wants a college community and an early answer, and is comfortable in a bilingual university. Its 2027/28 tuition is the lowest of the three.

Common, avoidable mistakes:

  1. Treating the published percentage as a target. HKU, HKUST and CUHK all describe these figures as minimums or reference points, and admission is competitive.
  2. Assuming 25 November is the first deadline. CUHK’s advance round closes on 12 November 2026.
  3. Leaving predicted grades to the school. HKU asks applicants to type every predicted and actual result into its system and warns that failing to do so may lead to rejection. Brief the school counsellor before you submit.
  4. Wasting a first choice. HKUST treats the first of its two choices as the highest priority, and many HKU business, law and medicine programmes give priority to first-choice candidates.
  5. Choosing Class 11 subjects too late. HKU’s engineering and science degrees set minimums in Mathematics and a science, and HKUST’s engineering choices require senior-level Mathematics. Those decisions are made in Class 11.

Frequently asked questions

Is HKU better than HKUST and CUHK?

Not for every student. HKU offers the professional degrees many families want, but HKUST’s school-based entry suits undecided science, engineering and business students, and CUHK offers colleges and the lowest tuition of the three. Compare programmes, not names.

Can my child apply to HKU, HKUST and CUHK in the same year?

Yes. They are separate applications with separate fees. Within each, the limits differ: up to three programme choices at HKU, two choices at HKUST, and one application per student at CUHK.

Is the SAT needed for CBSE or ISC students?

No. All three assess Indian board applicants on board results and English marks or an English test. The SAT is a separate route for students with US-patterned qualifications.

Which is cheapest for an Indian student?

On tuition, CUHK, at HK$230,000 a year for 2027/28, against HK$260,000 at HKUST and HK$250,000 to HK$280,000 at HKU. Housing changes the picture: HKUST’s university housing for non-local students covers Year 1 only.

How GyanOne helps with your application

We help Indian students choose between HKU, HKUST and CUHK on programme, entry route, subject rules and cost.
