The GMAC recommendation letter format is a standard letter of recommendation format used by most business schools. This GMAC recommendation letter sample can be used to write your student’s best letter of recommendation. Moreover, it has 4 questions to be answered to write a good recommendation letter.

Why do business schools use the GMAC recommendation letter format?

First, it is widely accepted and used by many business schools. So, if you are applying to multiple business schools, this GMAC recommendation letter format will save you a lot of time because you do not have to write the same thing again and again. Second, this GMAC standard letter of recommendation format includes 4 questions that need to be answered by your recommender. The first question is about your personal qualities like leadership skills and adaptability. The second is about academic performance like GPA and grades, and the third is about extracurricular activities like clubs or volunteer work, the fourth is about career plans after graduation, etc.

What questions are asked in the GMAC recommendation format?

The GMAC recommendation format has an objective section and a subjective section with the following questions:

  1. Please provide a brief description of your interaction with the applicant and, if applicable, the applicant’s role in your organisation.
  2. How does the applicant’s performance compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? (e.g., what are the applicant’s principal strengths?)
  3. Describe the most crucial piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response.
  4. Is there anything else we should know? (Optional)

Are there any word limits for the GMAC format recommendation questions?

While the format does not prescribe any word limits per se, different schools modify the structure and impose their requirements. While some schools mandate that answers be no longer than 300 words, others are fine with recommenders even writing up to 500 words. Some schools, such as Kellogg, also change some of the questions on the GMAC format (Q1 for Kellogg is different) to suit their requirements.

How should you use the GMAC sample recommendation here?

We have mentioned earlier that we are against samples as they usually lead to applicants narrowing their thinking and assuming that a sample is a template. Using this sample is an example only for illustration purposes. Your recommenders should write about their experiences.

We recommend using this sample only for inspiration and not as a template for your own or your recommender’s writing.

Sample GMAC recommendation letter

Please provide a brief description of your interaction with the applicant and, if applicable, the applicant’s role in your organisation.

Jane has been the Accounts, Payable Manager at ABC Company since January 2015. In her current role, she supervises a team of four accountants responsible for paying vendors and reconciling accounts payable accounts. She also prepares monthly reports on the status of outstanding invoices and her staff’s progress toward completing their work promptly.

Ms Doe is an excellent employee who has consistently exceeded expectations in her performance and commitment to our organisation. She has fantastic ideas about how we can improve our business strategy. Still, more importantly, she can implement those ideas effectively by working within our existing framework, which shows real maturity on her part.

How does the applicant’s performance compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? (e.g., what are the applicant’s principal strengths?)

Jane’s performance has been exemplary in every respect. Her knowledge of accounting rules and procedures is extensive, and she has an excellent understanding of the legal environment in which ABC operates. She has developed excellent relationships with all key vendors and clients, making them feel comfortable working with our company and willing to extend us credit when needed. Jane is also an excellent communicator who consistently goes above and beyond what is required by her job description in terms of communicating with other departments within the company (especially Sales) to ensure that everyone is aware of upcoming payment deadlines or other issues that might affect their ability to meet those requirements successfully.

Jane has been an integral part of our team since joining us five years ago. Her ability to think creatively, solve problems, and manage teams have made her a tremendous asset to our firm. While working with Jane, I have seen her as a team leader by taking charge and ensuring everyone is on the same page. She has also motivated and inspired others to do their best work.

Jane is a strategic thinker who always thinks about the big picture. She has helped us develop and implement new systems for managing financial data and has worked with our international offices to ensure that they have the necessary tools and resources.

Jane is also an excellent communicator who builds strong relationships with clients and colleagues alike. She has excellent follow-through and follows up on tasks until they are complete. Jane is also a great mentor who can develop junior staff members by teaching them new skills and providing guidance when needed.

Describe the most crucial piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response.

Jane Doe has been an accountant at ABC Company for three years. She is a competent and hard-working employee, but I have noticed two areas where she could improve. First, Jane is not very good at delegating tasks to other employees. She likes to take on too much work herself and does not trust others to complete the job correctly. Second, Jane needs to improve her communication skills with other employees. She often comes across as condescending and bossy when dealing with other employees, which can cause tension in the workplace.

Recently, I gave Jane constructive feedback about these two areas of improvement at our weekly staff meeting. I explained that she needed to delegate more work to other employees so that she did not become overwhelmed with responsibilities and stressed out by her workload. I also explained that she needed to improve her communication skills with coworkers so that they felt comfortable talking with her about any issues they had with their jobs or the company without feeling intimidated or afraid of reprisal from Jane if they said something she didn’t like.

Is there anything else we should know? (Optional)

Jane is also very involved in volunteering with training initiatives at ABC company. She takes the initiative to help other employees improve their skills by giving them tips on doing their jobs better. Jane is always willing to take on additional responsibilities whenever needed, which shows her commitment to the company’s long-term goals.

I would like to mention accountant Jane’s upcoming promotion and her work volunteering with training initiatives at ABC company. ABC Company recently partnered with XYZ, an organisation dedicated to training future accountants. As a result of this partnership, we have implemented a new training program designed to prepare students for the CPA exam. Jane has taken on a leading role in this initiative by volunteering her time with students from local high schools every week. She is helping them prepare for their exams and teaching them valuable work habits that will serve them well throughout their careers.

In conclusion, I’m delighted to recommend Jane as a potential applicant for your program. With her energy, mindset, and ambition, she will be a great MBA student at PQR.
